About Maine

Maine is a component state of the United States. It is the most expansive of the six New England states and is located in the northeastern region of the United States. Its overall size, which includes around 2,300 square miles (6,000 square kilometers) of inland water, is nearly half of New England’s total area. Maine is bordered by the Canadian provinces of Quebec and New Brunswick to the northwest and northeast, and by New Hampshire to the west. Along the Atlantic Ocean, the iconic rocky coastline of the state is angled from southwest to northeast. Maine became the 23rd state to join the union on March 15, 1820; its capital is Augusta. The Algonquian-speaking peoples who inhabited the area referred to it as “Land of the Frozen Ground.” There are two hypotheses regarding the origin of the state’s English name: that it was named for the former French province of Maine, or that it was so named for being the “mainland” as opposed to the coastal islands.

Maine has the lowest population density east of the Mississippi River. More than 80% of the entire land area is covered by forest. By most statistical metrics, Maine is an economically devastated state, but the raw beauty and difficulty of its climate and geography, as well as the character of its people, have given Maine a significance that transcends its economic and political influence. Restricted economic development has led to the preservation of a substantial portion of its natural aspect. One-third of the southern coastal counties in the state have had rapid development rates, increased residential and commercial construction, and higher revenues since 1970. The historic industry of Maine, the manufacturing of paper and paper goods, has deteriorated as the state’s economy has become more dependent on services. Agriculture, fishing, forestry, and mining represent the second most significant industry. Thus, the state exemplifies the increasingly tough national choices between environmental protection and prospective economic growth. Area 35,380 square miles (91,634 square km). 2020 population estimate: 1,362,359
