About Minnesota
the American state of Minnesota. On May 11, 1858, it joined the union as the 32nd state. Minnesota is the most northern of the 48 contiguous U.S. states thanks to a little stretch of the northern limit. (This odd protrusion is the product of a border agreement with Great Britain before the region had been thoroughly studied.) One of the states in the north central region is Minnesota. It is bordered to the north by the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Ontario, to the east by Lake Superior and the state of Wisconsin, to the south by the state of Iowa, and to the west by the states of South Dakota and North Dakota.
The tens of thousands of rivers in Minnesota run in three different directions: south via the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico, east through the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean through the Red and Rainy rivers, and north via the Hudson Bay. In fact, Minnesota got its name from the Dakota (Sioux) phrase for the state’s main Mississippi tributary, the Minnesota River, which means “sky-tinted water.”
The bulk of Minnesota’s lakes are situated in regions of glacial moraine, where glaciers left behind sand and gravel hills. Red Lake, Mille Lacs Lake, Leech Lake, Lake Winnibigoshish, Lake of the Woods, and Rainy Lake are some of the lakes with an extent larger than 100 square miles (260 square kilometers). The northeastern boundary of the state is made up of around 160 miles of Lake Superior’s coastline, one of the biggest freshwater lakes in the world (260 km). The granite bedrock in northern Minnesota was carved by glaciers into deep, clear lakes and stream valleys.
