About Wisconsin
Wisconsin, one of the 50 states that make up the USA. On May 29, 1848, Wisconsin became the 30th state to join the union. It is one of the north-central states, bordered to the north by the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the western part of Lake Superior, and to the east by Lake Michigan. To the south is the state of Illinois, while to the west and southwest, respectively, are the states of Minnesota and Iowa. The Algonquin name Meskousing, which is claimed to mean “this stream of red stone” and refers to the Wisconsin River, was translated into French and then anglophoned to become Wisconsin. Wisconsin’s state capital is Madison, located in the state’s centre south.
Massive glaciers blanketed what is now Wisconsin more than 12,000 years ago. When the ice sheet started to melt during the Wisconsin Glacial Stage, it left behind beautiful geological features such outwash plains, terminal and kettle moraines, drumlins, eskers, and low-lying regions that eventually turned into lakes.
